Jumanji
I have actually used this book in my classroom already and the students seem to really enjoy the activity we do with it. Jumanji is a book about two curious children who find a mysterious game. From the first roll they make, they realize that this game is different from any of the toys they have at home.
*This activity will actually utilize the illustrations and the words, but at two different times. First of all, make copies of some of the pictures from the book. Place students into groups, giving each group a copy of a picture from the book. Have students use their sensory images (touch, taste, smell, sight, sound) to create a description of the scene.
~For the cover photo shown above, students might write something like this: As I walked into the kitchen for a snack, I was shocked to realize that there were dirty, brown monkeys on our table. Their disgusting, outdoorsy smell made me realize that I wasn't hungry anymore. When I tried to slowly back out of the kitchen, the monkeys noticed me and started screeching and yelping loudly. I wanted to cover my ears and run, but the started creeping towards me with a hateful look in their black, beady eyes.
*At the same time that some students are doing the above activity, other students can do quite the opposite. They can receive a copy of the words from various pages. They can use the words to create an illustration. This activity, although fun, is also one that encourages them to use higher order thinking skills by creating a mental image and putting that image on paper.
