The Sweetest Fig
As I mentioned in the summary for this book, The Sweetest Fig is a wonderful read aloud. If you, as the teacher, do not give anything away while students share out, they will be so surprised when you get to the end of the book.
*Start off by showing students the cover and reading the title out loud. Have them think about a prediction and share it with their partner. As you read, there are several times to stop and ask students to predict what will happen next. It would also be a good idea to have students discuss what type of person they think Monsieur Bibot is, based on the illustration where he's pulling the old woman's teeth and the way he treats his dog, Marcel.
*As an extension for this activity, students can write about what happens when Bibot wakes up to find out that his dog has inhabited his body. They can think about how Bibot feels, how Marcel feels, what Marcel does to get revenge, and what Marcel does now that he is no longer a dog.
